Exciting News!!

Next door to the Flower Girl shop

a brand new Antique Mall is now open!!

Ye Olde Marketplace!!

So here at the flower girl

we decided to do an October tablescape

to celebrate!

Just like the last Tablescape Tuesday posting,

the fabric gave the color direction to the ‘scape.

I actually had these exact colors in mind, but no fabric or tablecloth:(

The day after my new antique mall neighbor moved in- I

spotted this great piece of plaid in tan, black and white

in her booth and for a great price- only 5 Bucks.

It worked perfectly, as you will soon see- with all the items I had!

Like these tin prints…

I was going for a fall theme….

with the white pumpkins and gold-rimmed plates

the white Mums and burlap military sack..

I even had my daughter draw a

Fall chalkboard sign!

Isn‘t that AMAZING?? She drew it with CHALK!

But, despite my efforts to make this a Fall display..

something more sinister happened along the way!

with the black wall in the background,

and curly willow branches bare

a certain haunted feeling

was suddenly everywhere….

It wound up with an almost
vintage-y Phantom of the opera type vibe-

(  I know I was rhyming a bit.)

the little boo pumpkins are the bomb
the white mums on a cool metal stool in front of a Paris subway sign

I really liked how this whole tablescape came together!

   One last look…

Yes- that is black Indian corn you see!

Come back Wednesday for a great Give Away!!

Hello Hydrangeas!

 Lace Cap Hydrangea

one of my all time favorites for sure!

these beauties are from my yard!

I call them

“God’s Bouquet Holder”

they act as a perfect base for wedding bouquets!

a white hydrangea is at the base of this bouquet of callas and orchids

and a green hydrangea is at the base of this one

I don’t have an absolute favorite flower… BUT

if I did, the hydrangea would be a top contender!

thanks to Gema Blanton Photography &

the Wedded Bliss staff photographer

for these pictures of bouquets by The Flower Girl

a rose by many other names

a rose by many other names
a rose by many other names

this posy posting will feature another favorite flower of mine…the rose!

I actually have favorites within the favorite so to speak!

where do I start with the rose??

red rose first- this one is called Freedom

look at all those layers of petals…

Roses come in so  many other colors and varieties

like the dreamy Creme de la Creme

 isn’t it romantic?

and the Green Tea rose  for you health nut types

Here is my new favorite rose

It has at least a couple of names…Circus

and Ambiance are two that I’ve heard.

(I think Circus suits it best)

How about the amazing Malibu rose?

We did a wedding job a few years ago

for a wonderful, sweet and beautiful bride

where we used a lot of Malibu roses

And she looked like a Barbie doll ;)

We called her the “Malibu Barbie” bride

A  wrist corsage for Prom made with pink spray roses

And one made with white  spray roses…

We have lots of pretty roses this week

for Mother’s Day! And it’s not too late even for delivery!

Oh, by the way we have more than roses, too

  LOTS MORE!

thanks to Picture this by MJ & Krystle Akin for the pics of Tara's flowers.

Blue on Blue

Blue on Blue
Blue on Blue

I don’t really have the blues,

but my Hallway  buffet does!

If only I had a BEFORE picture of this

white buffet/dresser -

you would not believe the transformation!

It had not been painted since it was in my Grandmother's house...
say about 1989 or so... and one of our dogs chewed the top right corner ;(
My wonderful, talented hubby painted it, sanded and refinished the oak top and-

Then he built a base for it to raise

it up to a serving buffet height!

It has this huge and beautiful, carved mirror on it!

I changed  out the knobs to some vintage-looking

glass ones that I got at First Monday in Canton,Tx .

Then I  dressed it up with a blue on  blue collection of vintage postcards,
Hull vases and an old soap stand bowl.

I know my guestbook register is pink…

I am NOT getting another one ’til it’s filled,

so come see me!

More looks at this hallway vignette

forget- me- nots postcard

top of the dresser/buffet’s carving…

some of the detail of the old wash basin

these amazingly blue berries are from my leather

leaf mahonia bush-

it is so rare to see this color blue in nature!

and an old chippy blue rose print hangs on the wall-
I am so sad I did not get a picture of the painting above it!

You see – my daughter Lindsay painted our house in the

snow, you can only see the bottom edge of it..

I ended this post kinda BLUE, didn’t I?

Come back next week….TAX week…will be announcing our

local give-away

It is a bit different than the past give-aways.

I was in  Feathered Nest Fridays at

http://frenchcountrycottage.blogspot.com/

Thanks for visiting today!

It’s All Black and White to Me!

It’s All Black and White to Me!
It’s All Black and White to Me!

 well….this is going to be a very self-centered post…

You see, I love to pick up random

Pretty Paper Napkins

whenever they are on sale …from wherever!

I found these for a SONG

at Hobby Lobby and since I  have

a few ” A”  names in the family,

I thought 'Why Not?" let's see-

there is Alyssa

and there is Abigail

Both of these cuties are too young for the classic

black-n-white paper products I purchased .

??WHAT TO DO???

oh yeah….there is one more person in the family with an A name

 ME!!

 great picture, huh?
so here's an online hint for my upcoming May birthday-

I’ve already got the napkins and plates covered!

I even have an”A” mug from

Julie’s bridesmaid’s luncheon

It was my thank-you gift:)

which leads me to a confusing issue...
are you supposed to thank people for thank you gifts?
Because if you are..when would it ever end??
Thank you for thanking me for...thanking you for...

Here are the A napkins and plates

paired with a real, actual silhouette of ME

(I warned you this was going to be selfish!)

Can you believe we did these in art class in about the 3rd grade??

Also in the background is this vintage image

from the Graphics Fairy -

I will be doing a post soon on

how to transfer images…

Very Cool Very Vintage!

I transferred some of these

images to  plain ivory linen napkins….

but it didn’t work out too well,

so I have to PerFect it!

Let me leave you with a couple of relevant links-

for darling silhouette Pillows, jewelry and more ,

visit Dear Lillie

and for a good listen on  SELF-CONTROL

tune into the podcast at Living Acts Church

and that’s it -spelled out in BLACK and WHITE!

Dead of Winter

Dead of Winter
Dead of Winter

A few posts ago, I said I would show

you how my teacart looked for Winter*

this dried leaf was the inspiration

I picked it up off the ground at my daughter’s house ..have not got a clue what it is,but it looks like a rusty butterfly.

so you're thinking... "she is too far gone" or "she lost her marbles" or maybe
"she's a taco short of a combo plate"?

Hold on there jest a cotton pickin’ minute-

Not so fast!

What do you think NOW?

kinda gives a new meaning to the phrase 'dying art'  would'nt you say?
I started with a round Battenburg white table topper cloth,

then began adding pretties that echoed

the dried hues in the roses

and mystery “butterfly” leaves

like the red transferware plate

and floral dessert bowls

I really love the soft antique look

that the dried roses have…

the trio of bottles were a Junk store find

roses and petals in a trifle dish

& hydrangea in a silver basket

 I don’t have a mantle to decorate,

so the teacart in my dining room gets the

seasonal revolving door treatment!

The white soup tureen was a yard sale find and

believe it or not I have gotten a LOT of use out of it!

It is pretty much a favorite item for all my Teacart settings....

this bowl would’ve worked too, but it was

already kinda crowded on the ol’ teacart

So what do ya think?

inspiration can come from almost anything

….so start getting inspired!

By the way... the movie "Dead of Winter" is pretty good, intense, scary...
only a tiny bit of violence I think

so watch it if you dare!

Color Theory and You!

Color Theory and You!

Real quick, before I do anything else, I want to talk about Color Theory. “Color Theory?” you say? “Yes, I do.” Why? Because, once a person has a basic understanding of the color wheel, how to mix colors, and how colors relate to each other in color schemes, they may apply this to pretty much any area of life! Take, for example, the following pictures taken from freerangestock.com:

Primary door
Primary/Triadic Color scheme-Red, yellow, and blue
Analogous from the yellow, yellow orange, red oranges
split complimentary sunflower
Split Complimentry sunflowers using purple, yellow, yellow-green, and yellow-orange
Very green! and very Monochromatic!
Complimentary Blues and Orange/yellows: naturally occurring in Creation!
Triadic Color Scheme- variations of blue, yellow, and red

As you can see, because there is color all around us, how we interact with those colors on a daily basis and how we put those colors together can impact a room, a plate of food, an outdoor setting, an outfit, the exterior of a house, etc.. I LOVE IT!!

Once your eyes are opened to this, you’ll see it everywhere. Then, you’ll be able to put colors together well and play around with all the different hues, depths, and variations of each color on the color wheel. The Color Wheel is the origin of all colors. From it, using white and black when needed, any color can be created.

I had planned on giving a brief lesson on mixing colors, the color wheel, and color schemes.

THEN, I thought, why not direct you to some fab online lessons? Here are some great sites and links to learn about color. Give them a try!

Here are a few examples of color schemes at work in my house:

Wedding Wednesdays

Wedding Wednesdays

The plan is to showcase past and present weddings, wedding ideas

and stories from some of the 200 PLUS weddings designed

by The Flower Girl  since we opened in 2003.

There are some funny stories to tell, believe me…but the names

would HAVE to be changed to protect ME!!

there is the case of the MISSING license,  the HURRICANE,

the singing MOTHER of the Bride, the dance DROP,

too much SUN, perfectly timed SNOW, poorly timed RAIN

 and often the unpredictable WIND!

so just to ignite the imagination:

below is a vintage Spring setting at a Summer wedding -

in the blue Mason jar you’ll see an Amnesia Rose,

as well as stock ,cornflower, plumosa fern, thistle and Kermit poms.

Oh yeah -and a white astilbe (looks like a feather).

Next…to fire up your Taste and Flower Buds……

a spicy Summer square vase with a Freedom Rose,

a Skyline rose ,lemon leaf, chili peppers and red hypercum berries,

for your Fall rehersal dinner at your favorite Tex-Mex venue!*

And  to finish our Wedding  Wednesday postings ,

here is a little Winter Woodland Romance ♥

Rachel’s soft bridal bouquet with ivory Vendella roses, white hypercum berries,

antique hydrangea, and cream stock

along with Winterey greens of fir and aromatic cedar.

And yes! the cake from Amazing Grace Cakes was delicious and I hope the

Bride and Groom got more than the ONE bite each!

Come back next Wednesday,October 5th and we’ll be blogging

about a wedding as we are putting it together.

Thanks for stopping by!

*P.S. Thank goodness for spell-check. I had Ex-Mex instead of Tex-Mex,

that’s NO BUENO for writing about weddings .
